Prescribing for Allied Health Professionals. University of Ulster

In 2005, joint formal consultation by the DoH and the Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on proposals to extend Supplementary Prescribing to Chiropodists/Podiatrists, Physiotherapists and Radiographers led to amendments to Section 63 of the Health and Social Care Act 2003, Prescriptions Only Medicines (Human Use) Order 1997 and related regulations, resulting in Supplementary Prescribing rights being extended to these health professions. The Department of Health has actively requested and supports the provision of this programme, which has been identified as specific to the future requirements of Allied Health Professionals and needs of the modernised workforce.
