Programme Overview

This programme will provide students with an all round education in the principles and practice of solid organ transplantation above and below the diaphragm. The programme at Newcastle is distinctive in providing participants with an in-depth appreciation of Transplantation Sciences in the clinical setting, alongside linking academic theory with 'real' workplace practice.

The programme has been developed in partnership with the Institute of Transplantation at the Freeman Hospital, and it is here that students will be based for the duration of their studies.

The programme aims to develop student's knowledge and understanding of;

  • The major issues and developments around clinical transplantation
  • The major ethical and legal issues associated with solid organ transplantation
  • The processes of liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation from initial identification of donor recipients through to post-operative care
  • The process of heart, lung and heart-lung transplantation from initial identification of donor recipients through to post operative care
